Frequently Asked Questions: Security

Q. How secure is EDI?

A. All communication between the contractor and HM Revenue & Customs is delivered through trusted (authorised certified bodies) 3rd party network providers, i.e. Value Added Networks, or uses other direct communication methods, e.g. X.400, Integrated Services Digital Network.

Documentation regarding security of data is available from the individual communication software suppliers.

The names and addresses for these companies are in the EB4 (CIS) EDI Software Developers List

Q. How can we keep track of what has been sent and when?

A. EDS, on behalf of HM Revenue & Customs, has a tracking system, which monitors all files sent and received. This also includes acknowledgement receipts between HM Revenue & Customs and the employer.
