Tax

Meet Anne Baxter

Dull work? You couldn’t be more wrong. There are many kinds of tax and we employ many kinds of tax specialists to deal with them.

With administration teams IT support systems doing much of the calculations, our tax professionals are free to interpret the figures. It’s a bit like detective work, as they are presented with the evidence and decide whether or not to investigate.

The roles are varied and involve meetings with customers or working with accountants and solicitors, mostly at customer premises.

  • Caseworkers get involved in complex projects as part of a team.
  • Investigators look into challenging fraud cases.
  • Technical advisors offer specialist, complex advice.

We develop most of our top tax professional people through the Graduate Programme, which is also open to current employees, with or without a degree. You’ll begin by joining and learning from an experienced team, with your responsibilities increasing in line with your knowledge and confidence. Before you know it, you’ll be comfortably carrying out interviews, making site visits and even leading a team.

The Programme’s modular structure includes core modules designed to equip you with a range of essential skills and knowledge.

  • Practical work experience, on live assignments, as part of a team.
  • Formal study days at one of our training centres.
  • Tutor-led sessions, self study and office work, as well as exams and practical work assessments designed to build up your knowledge of tax law and practice.
  • Regular reviews and appraisals.

You’ll aim to complete the Programme in four years and be ready to work in a technical/investigative or customer relationship manager role.

Pay

The Programme offers a starting salary of £23,929 (national) or £26,010 (London). On successful completion, you can look forward to a salary band starting at £42,586 (national), £47,735 (London). A pay award is pending so these figures may change.

What you’ll need to apply

To be considered for our graduate programme, you’ll need a 2:1 honours degree at application stage or expect to achieve a 2:1 honours degree in September 2009. We look for people who enjoy tackling complex issues, using their intellect and solving problems. You’ll also need to be confident with numbers, work well in a team and interested in how businesses function. We occasionally recruit for tax professionals directly – you’ll find vacancies here or in the national press.
